First here are my specs:
486DX2/66
6.4 Gig HD
64 MB RAM
Diamond Stealth 64 VLB
8x CD Rom Drive

Will this computer work with linux? Also, which package should I go for and where can I get it? Do I need a 700MB CD to burn the ISO? Also, any books you would recommend? If this box isn't good enough, what type of upgrade can I do that won't be very costly?

Thanks in advance guys.. as for experience wise, I've used unix before and know basic commands, but hope to learn more on the linux box.. whether it's setting up DHCP, a mail/file/print server, etc.

That system will be fine as long as you don't run X.
You would want more RAM and a faster processor if you intend to run X. However, since you seem to want to play around with server stuff, X is not needed, and it is actually recommended that you don't run X on a server...

You should be just fine running X, though it might be slow if you use a window manager that hogs resources like Enlightenment. However, there are plenty of window managers that will run smooth as silk with X on that system. The RAM is plenty. There shouldn't be too much use, though it depends on your server traffic. You should be able to set up a server with relative ease, and some distro's do it for you!

Well, I'm going to have to say RedHat if you want the quickest setup and a distro that will give you enough features and control over the environment. But personally I run slackware, although if you don't have specifically linux experience, you aren't likely to get it up and running all the things you want on your own.

Yeah, you can run Apache, it will probably even come installed with the distro you choose...as for MySql, that's a little big..it might work, but I think I'd try something smaller like msql. As for a distro, most are made for binary 386--just stay away from Mandrake...however, with that said, you will desire a faster machine once you get going.

Thanks,
