Linux..what are LILO and GRUB?

i am setting up a system with 2k pro and mandrake 8.1. what are LILO AND GRUB?? will they be set up automatically? which one should i use?? 2kPro will be my primary and mandrake 8.1 will be on a extra partition.

They are both boot loaders, LILO is the traditional but grub is generally more featurefull. I would say go with grub because it's easier to get back into your system should something go wrong.
 
You can boot off a floppy and leave your drives MBR un-touched if you want and try grub or lilo on the floppy and see which one you might need the most. I use lilo on my boot desk and don't really need anything else but maybe you might want to play around with grub as well so go ahead and make a boot disk. Remember fd01 = your floppy drive when you are configuring you bootloader.
