Linux Utilities?

I am looking for a website that has Linux Utilities, such as AIM instant messenger (although i found it) Winamp, Open Office, Licq,CD burning software, etc.

I am becoming a Linux Junkie and looking for these when I want to browse the web 😀

I also need to ask, I have an old Star Office 5.1 CD, can I upgrade to 5.2? or is Open Office just as good? And what exactly is Oracle8i?

I got all this when I bought RedHat 6.1 way back when, and I couldn't do a thing with it (then) but I now have Red Hat 7.2 and it's improved immensely.

One of the properties of Linux operating system distributions is that they already include a rich set of utilities of the type you refer to. The only time you need to get these programs yourself is if you need a new version that the vendor does not currently supply.

The main exception is 3rd-party commercial software, usually proprietary server software such as Oracle 8i (the most popular relational database) or software development tools.

Since RH 7.2 doesn't include OpenOffice, you'll have to get/install it yourself from their website. OpenOffice 1.0 is definitely better than StarOffice 5.x.

Alternatively, you could subscribe to Ximian Red Carpet, which serves as a commercial distribution channel for various open-source software. Red Hat up2date is a similar program run for its operating system distribution.
 
Actually, you shouldn't need to look much farther than your cds for most of what you are going for. You should have AIM(gaim), a winamp clone (xmms) Licq and several burning programs on the discs.

For star office, 5.2 is free if you can find it, probably on sun's download pages, but 6.0 is pay software. Open office is most of the features in Star Office, with the new version being close to 6.0 AFAIK. Don't know what sun chopped out tho, that's just what I read someplace.
 
No matter what people say, freshmeat.net is still the best place to look for up to date software of any kind for Unix-like systems.
