I'm a fellow Linux newbie now (very, very newbie, as in I don't know how to do anything and installed a boxed distribution)... but if I'm not mistaken, an iso file is just a data image meant to be burned to a CD. The installation programs, etc. should be in the iso file which can be accessed after it is burned.

As a fellow Linux n00b I can't help much, other then to say that when I was searching for a distro (too cheap to buy one) A few help files pointed out a way to open iso format files that are not burnt to CD, but hell if I know how.

Ok, I use FreeBSD on occasion and what I did was: put in the CD, go and type in some spiffy command to access the CD's menu, here you can choose to install/remove ANYTHING that's on the CD.

Keep in mind this was FreeBSD...

You can install the .rpm files on the disk using one of the RPM managers that come with Mandrake.
Last time I looked at the 'extra-apps' CD of Mandrake (7.1) there were only .rpm files on it, so it should be extremely easy to install them :)

depends on what it is. RPMs install themselves.

If it is an rpm type at a command line:

rpm -iv whatever.rpm

after that it will usually extract itself to a working directory somewhere. Most of the time simply typing the name of the application at the command line will load the program.. if not go to that working directory and run the program from there.

If it is a tar.gz file you'll need to unzip

gunzip is command to unzip..

after that tar -xvf whatever.tar should extract..

then for the most part you will usually need to compile with a

./configure and then a 'make' depending on what the readme says.

edit: let me know if you have specific questions.

Mandrake 8 also has this software manager program...I don't know if it handles more than the orignal installation package though. Don't remember exactly what it was called, so you'll have to prowl around in your gnome or kde menus. In general, it just handles RPM files. For most RPM files, "rpm -Uvh blah*.rpm" should do nicely. But there are sometimes dependency issues that requires running a few rpm...the software manager thing handles this. I only used this thing once though since I pull all my files and required dependency files from www.rpmfind.net.

An ISO is a image file, which you will need to burn to a cd, with nero or something. I believe that is disk 2 of the mandrake install. Burn to a CD, then mount it, and see whats on it. (you can do this with file manager, it should "automount" when you insert it, then go to the /mnt/Cdrom folder, or type "mount /mnt/cdrom at the command prompt) as for your dsl connection, just setup your linux box like you would on any other network. Remember, you need your IP, Subnet mask hostname(possibly) and Default gateway to connect, the same info you need for windows. If you use a dhcp server, however, you would just select that in your network setup, and the rest should be done for ya.
