Why does it matter if you have to use wine? And why would you expect a linux distro that can run windows apps without wine?

In any case, free wine with dx9 will run hl2 fine. But if you have cedega, you might is well use it. Its a great app.
 
just hoping for the possiblity since I'm probably going to be dumping windows on my main box. 🙂 thanks for the replies.

Linux != Windows. Therefore without the API layers provided by Wine/Codeweavers/Cedega you will never be successful in running Windows apps natively on Linux.
