Hey guys, when i get my computer up and running i want to dual boot with Linux and WIndos 2000 Prof.

Now, ive always heard about linux but never really paid attention...all i know is that it is an OS :p, and there seem to be a lot of ppl that use it. So, im just wondering what does Linux do or do better that Windows cant (sorry if this is a dumb question.) Also, how easy is Linux to understand/learn/get use to using? I like to play around with computers and im willing to learn....but if i need to know some kind of programming language or something to use it i dont think ill even bother. Also is there some website where i can read up about Linux get some general information or even learn how to use it???

Oh ya, also....ive heard of a bunch of different versions for Linux like Redhat, Mandrake, Debian, Gentoo, Slackware....is there somewhere i can read up on the differences between these?? Or is there one version that is very good for Linux noobs to use?

Thanks

Can you see the sticky on the front page of the OS forums? Start there and read. Linuxnewbie.org is also a goo place to start. Or search the forums on linux and see what comes up.

This has been rehashed too many times.... please use the forum search function.

read this to get a general idea of what it is. then go to www.linux.org or google some linux sites but you can get pretty good ideas of what distributions are like by reading some introductions on their sites: redhat.com, debian.org, gentoo.org etc.

if you enjoy configuring computers and general tinkering then Linux would possibly be a good project for you. I say project because it takes time and effort to learn all the finer detail but at the end of the day it may well be worth it.
