Going to build my first 2 linux systems for a client. Just wanted to check compatability with the experts. Also this will be a dual boot with win2k. Don't know what flavor of Linux is going in. Any recomendations on parts or procedures is greatly appreciated.

Everything should work OK, I only suggest to get different brand HDD. There were problems with WD HDD's and linux past, they may not be 100% resolved. I recommend RH 7.1 or newest SUSE for linux distro.

Everything should be OK, but the raedon might be a bit annoying to get 3d support for. I think XFree86 4.1 (the latest version) supports raedon 2d acceleration, so 2d should be OK. If you have any trouble join linux irc and go to the #ati room and they will surely help you. I recommend SUSE, Debian, or Slackware 8 for linux distro's or FreeBSD if you want to be as close to unix as possible.

In case you're not sure how to do IRC, do this:

# BitchX nickname irc.linux.com
(bitchx opens up and connects)
/join ati

the # just represents your shell prompt, it could be "Bash-2.01#" or "localhost" or any number of things depending on the distro.

then you'll be able to ask your question. Hope it works out for you.

AFAIK latest kernel and X has support for Radeon 3D, too. You only need kernel with ATI DRI support, easier to set up than Nvidia's drivers 🙂

I'm pretty sure Xfree86 4.1 supports 2d and 3d on the Radeon, if not I know for a fact that DRI's sourceforge page has radeon 3d drivers. I've played quake 3 just fine on my Linux+radeon system.
