Linux - suspend, hibernate etc.

How do I get this to work? I have built in acpi and apm into the kernel.
I'm using 2.6.9 and kde.
distro simply mepis.

Although i've set kde control center to turn off monitor, suspend and power off after 15, 45, 120 mins, nothing
happens.
