Well... Linux is still like wearing pantyhose, but curiously one seems to get used to it.
It took 5 calls to Russ and a headache, a lot of cursing - but I now have my Linux server doing pproxy and stats! I'm so pleased... I think I learned something, but I couldn't tell you what it was. NT is so much more familiar and friendly to me. Linux sure is stable though... :)

Next Phase - CRACK RACK 3 !

I was completely calm and collected. Wearing pantyhose is something Russ is VERY familiar with... :Q

Just kidding Big Guy - Thanks for the help!

Dale -
Well, I don't know if I'm like, and official "trout farmer" or anything...
I have 14 Rainbow trout. They range from about 6 1/2" to about 10" now.

Growing every day!

reason for my question.. several people here go to the trout fishery
and buy 'fancy' trout . they just raise them for the looks.. they
are pretty.. real shiny blue

I used to have Coi and fancy goldfish.. but no more : (

KW, thanks for the link - Is your interest in mosix more than academic?

RC, my interest in mosix is to turn my Rack into a Beowulf Cluster.
One "Master" node with HDD & GUI interface, severing the other 3 nodes via NFS.

"Academic" in the sense that I'll learn something, yes. :)
It's not a project for class or anything, it's a project for me.

When all finished, it'll be my main Linux box.
I'll be the first kid on my block with his own Beowulf Cluster. ;)

DanC - glad to see you on the path away from the dark side of the force... Yes Linux is a little different but you will be amazed when you don't have to reboot your machine every time you move your mouse... ;)

And Kilowatt, I'm glad I stopped into this thread and saw your link for Mosix! I know a couple of people who have been interested in setting up linux clustering as a project, but alot of the software to do it is 3rd party commercial/for cost or tends to only be offerred in the "enterprise" versions of some of the distros (eg., Red Hat and Turbo linux enterprise), and these are not cheap (at least in "free" Linux terms... ;)).

Good luck on that project and that might be something I may try when I get done some of my personal projects! :) I have an old Sparcstation and an alpha both running Red Hat that might be good candidates to cluster...

DanC,

I bow down t o your conviction. I tried...and failed due to frustration. Gone back to WinNT. =(

Jay -
It IS pretty frustrating for a while for an NT geek - but surmountable. After a while, it's actually kind-of logical. One thing that really helps is Webmin (www.webmin.com) That really simplifies.

"You can teach an old dog new tricks, you can teach a new dog old tricks, but you can't teach a dumb dog a damned thing" - I sure felt like a dumb dog for awhile. :)

you are over the hump now : ) if you have come this far you are on the road to being able to make your computer do what they were meant to do ... ie whatever you tell them to....

soon tar,./configure, make, make install will be second nature and you will be building your own kernal

I rarely use xwindows and was sorta suprised to see all the MM stuff available now.

been playing with RedHat 7 the past few days..

Why umlaut when you can put an e following the character you want to umlaut? :)

ae = ä
ue = ü
oe = ö

Etc...

(This is how it is officially done by germans and german-speaking people if they lack the 'umlauted' characters on their keyboards anyways... :) )

I now have ppstats running under Win98se. It was easier than I expected. If anyone needs help with ppstats under Win32 let me know. I'm new to it, but I will help if I can.
