Linux Sound Question: Recording

I managed to get the Trident modules loaded for my sound card, and it plays back PCM audio just fine. (I still haven't figured out how to get the /dev/dsp and /dev/mixer device links to DEFAULT to being writable; each and every time the sound card module is loaded, I have to log in as root and chmod those two devices in order to play anything!)

I have plugged in a headset to the sound card, using the headphone as output and the boom microphone as mic input. I run gmix and un-mute the microphone, and I can now hear myself through the microphone! This is usually all you need to do to get recording going, since the mixer is now hearing the microphone input. Theoretically, if I were to run a sound recorder, it should record anything the mixer hears.

But for some reason, when I try to record audio (with any program), I get only silence. The mixer shows the microphone as being SELECTED for recording and NOT MUTED. Nothing.

Any ideas?

Thanks in advance!
