Linux SOHO / Media system for less than $600?

I'm in the market for a new Linux system after many years of piecing my stuff together. My full tower case is jam packed full of hardware, some of it over ten years old!

I am intimidated and overwhelmed by everything that's out there and was wondering if the forum might be able to help me. Any experts able to glance at my needs and point me in the right direction? It would help me out a lot.

I use my computer for these things only: Photography, DTP/text editing, Web/Internet, Music.

The hardware requirements that I have are the following:

* Silent (my fans are too loud and I replace them every year!)
* Small and durable (I'm sick of this huge tower and like the idea of being able to take the system with me)
* Ports: USB, FireWire, Parallel, PS/2 keyboard, place for SD/SanDisk/SmartMedia cards
* DVDR/CDR drive (internal or external ok)
* Ethernet (or a PCI slot for the card I have)
* Good sound and graphics (that means speakers or at least a line out jack, too)
* Lots of drive space for thousands of photographs and audio files

Finally, is it possible to get this somewhere under $600? I plan on getting a big LCD monitor but count that separately in cost.

I don't know if this is an easy task or next to impossible. I hereby throw myself at the mercy of the forum. Any takers care to help?
