Linux rpm error

I'm trying to install samba on my linux box, but I keep getting the following error:

"only packages with major numbers <= 3 are supported by this version of RPM
error: rpm-4.0.2-8.i386.rpm cannot be installed"

This tell me that any package greater than 3 cannot be installed, right? I currently have rpm-3.0.4-0.48 installed. When I try to upgrade it I get the following version. Seems like an endless circle here. Help please...

Judging by the version of RPM you currently have, you're using Red Hat 6.2, right? If so, then use this RPM4 package from Red Hat. This one is meant specifically to update Red Hat 6.2, so it should work. If you're using a different version of Red Hat, you can get the update from this page.
