I've been contemplating consolidating my router + server into one machine which can perform the task of a router and http/mail/dns server.

Does anyone know of something which can provide web gui configuration for firewall, QoS and those sort of things which come on a router specific distro, but which can be installed on a more full-featured server distro? Similar to webmin but more task-specific.

Google searches just bring up the aforementioned router distros, i.e. smoothwall & pfsense.

Alternatively a router distro which can support the services, or even virtualbox would work I suppose.

Would Astaro Security Gateway suit your needs? We use this as our primary security gateway and web proxy for a K-12 school district. Astaro generously allows you a FREE home user license for up to 50 connected devices (IP addresses). I'm not sure if it will meet your needs for routing or mail serving, but I can attest that as a firewall/proxy it is solid.

I was thinking of providing free wifi to my apt complex, got a 1000mW router on the way, but was thinking of configuring it as an access point only, and hooking up a server machine to do logging and filtering of the connection. Bonus if it can act as a hotspot server.

Can Astaro do that?

Reading further, it seems that I want the "business free edition". Unfortunately, they want a company name and contact info. Does anyone have a direct download link? Or will the home edition do all the things the business edition does? (Routing/bridging/DNS/logging?)

Hey VirtualLarry,

Unless you are using it for a business (which I believe violates the terms of the free home license) the home use license (other than the 50 ip address limit) gives MUCH more functionality than the free business edition. I daresay that it looks to include all the features of the full enterprise version.

Check the product feature chart HERE

As to your specific question of if it will do what you wish - it WILL definitely do logging and filtering. I am not sure if it will be able to act as a hotspot server.

Try asking in the Astaro user forums

In addition, you can also try out one of their Live Demos
