Linux + Road Runner = Frustration

I've installed Mandrake Linux 7.2...and just got road runner today...it works great with Win98/2K...but I can't get it to work at all with Linux...

does anyone have any place they can point me to for some help? Experience/suggestions?

Does Linux need to be manually configured for RR? I thought it would get the IP using DHCP but it fails during boot (but the NIC seems to be working ok)...

Thanks,
AJ

one problem I had when setting up my linux box (Red Hat 7) was that I would hook up the modem to my windows machine, and connect to rr. then I tried hooking it up to my linux box, and the dhcp would fail on bootup. the fix turned out to be to unplug the modem, connect it to the linux box, plug in modem, then reboot. it really p'ed me off since I spent a week screwing around with it, and it was because of that. good luck.

I forgot to add that you can call rr and make sure you don't need a special utility to log onto their system. they used to do that, and still do in a few areas, but mostly now its completely DHCP.

I run a dual system, Linux and Windows Me on the same platform and had the same problem for a bit. What Warlord said is correct, you have to reboot (unplug) the modem to get it to work. It seems that the Cable/Dsl modem when it connects grabs settings from your Os and when you do the switch the modem is still set in Windows mode. It also took me about a week to figure this out.

You don't really need a special hook-up for the Linux system but be sure to go copy ALL your info from WINIPCFG (run it from the Dos prompt). Then Run over to Linux input basically all the same information and your all set.

Enjoy!

Thanks Guys!

Now I have to get Caldera eServer (in lieu of Mandrake 7.2) to run with my GeForce GTS...thing goes crazy...

I'll try unplugging the modem this weekend and giving it another go.
