Can someone recommend one of those 5 dollar linux distros somewhere? I tried redhat before, but I was unimpressed. What is the latest kernel? 2.4?

I don't understand GPL, does that mean whatever software you develop on it, you can't charge for?

I'd like to try my hand at building a small pc cluster, I dunno if any distros are better for that.

oh also, the install must fit on a 1 gig hd.

You lookin to buy the cd? Cause you know you can download most distros for free right?

Mandrake is alright; it's great for beginners.

What about redhat didn't you like?

The 2.4.x is the latest series of kernels. I have no idea what the latest one is, as they change weekly it seems... maybe 2.4.14 now?

I don't develop, so I don't care about GPL, just so long as I still get free stuff :)

The install for most distros can be so freaking tiny you wouldn't believe it. You just have to uncheck packages you don't want to install, and check the ones you need.

and

"its not bloated at all it works soo good"

and

"redhat is for n00bs real guys dual boot to beOS and mandrake"

and

"and Gnome ownz KDE but CDE ownz them both"

Horribly untrue.

Distros are avaliable for free on their website if you've got broadband. Some to consider:

Slackware
Debian
Mandrake

Well hmmm. I know I have seen Mandrake and RedHat(shudder) in stores. However, most distros also sell packages off their website. If you're super cool, I am sure one of the guys with broadband here would send you the CDs if you're serious. If you get desperate, PM me.

Thanks for the offer. I hate troubling strangers though, so if it comes down to it I'll just get the latest 5 dollar redhat from linux central.

So what about GPL? If you develop software on linux, is it automatically public domain?

Um was that slandering? I really don't think I am a "fanboy" for these distributions, I just am not close minded about the real world. Yes, linux is cool, yes it works, yes it's fast, yes it's secure. I am sorry if you cannot comprehend that fact. I am not anti microsoft, I just choose not to use their products. I really hate comments like that.

You know.. that's a good question: here is the answer ->here

As for troubling strangers, I cannot speak for everyone, but I find it no trouble sharing the resources I have available to others who don't. If you're serious about it, let me know mate.
