Linux Question

I installed Ubuntu 7.04 on my laptop last night with the goal of not losing what I've learned in my basic linux OS class. It'll be a few months before the next linux class becomes available. Don't want to go into it rusty and I wanted it to be running on something decently powerful rather than my 2.53Ghz P4 and 2.4Ghz celeron DC boxes.

Back to the point, this morning, I installed VLC through the Synaptic manager and attempted to play a DVD movie. Totem loaded when I inserted the DVD, but stated I lacked the right plugins, Totem came up with a box for a plugin that it claimed would allow DVDs to play. I let it DL and install the plugin, however, the DVD still wouldn't play. VLC wouldn't play the DVD either.

A google search revealed that libdvdcss2 was needed. I followed the Sudo cmds listed on debuntu.org and installed the lib. However, neither Totem nor VLC would play the DVD.

I went to the bathroom and returned, attempting to play the DVD again. Suddenly, VLC plays the DVD but Totem does not, still stating there's no plugin. If VLC has the right libs to play DVDs, shouldn't Totem as well?
