Linux question

I'm using the Live CD for now, the distro is Whax/Slax. It worked fine before. Pop in the CD, boot up etc. Now, when I boot up, I try to get on Firefox. It starts, tries to load and closes. I tried it 5 times, nothing. I log out and look, and it says stuff about mozilla has a sementation fault.

Also, when I try to open certain programs, it says they aren't there?

Thanks!

Try a more commen live CD. I have found Ubuntu's to be one of the best (although it's slow to boot up) and Knoppix is the most commen of live CD's

A segfault is usually either a bug in the program or a hardware problem. Since you say it worked before I can't believe it's a bug in the program all of a sudden, so maybe there's a problem reading the disc or something. After it crashes next time trun 'dmesg' and see if there's anything in the kernel logs.

It could be that the liveCD is degrading. Particularly if this is a burned copy, as most liveCDs tend to be, it could be going off and starting to lose data. A compressed filesystem isn't going to have much in the way of durability under fire, and since your whole system is running off of said FS, the failures aren't going to be purely cosmetic. I'd try another copy of the liveCD.

Wow, thanks for the responses!

First reply: I've tried Ubuntu, it's not exactly what I need. I do like Ubuntu though, very nice. Whax is a verasion of Knoppix to my understanding, also.

dmesg, it didnt turn up with anything.

I believe its what you sid, phisrow. I'm gonna try burning it again, I'll post back with results.

Ubuntu: Debian fork
Knoppix: Debian fork
Whax: recently moved from a Knpoppix base to a SLAX base
SLAX: Live CD for slackware.

With the latest tools and exploits, it is a must for every penetration tester and security auditor. Whoppix includes several exploit archives, such as Securityfocus, Packetstorm, SecurityForest and Milw0rm, as well as a wide variety of updated security tools. The new custom kernel also allows for better WIFI support.

What particular tools are you in need of?

If you need to get certain tools or update existing ones often, I might suggest using a thumbstick distro. Having the OS on a flashdrive will allow for updates and program installation.

Here's a nice one I found: Knopperdisk

The USB version is more than just a rescue disk. It's based on Gentoo and contains various other programs/utilities such as network related tools (nmap, ettercap). For a full list go to the 'package list' section.
