Linux Question/Problem

I am running Mandrake 8.1 on this system:

FIC PA-2013
AMD k6-2 400
384 MB RAM (1*128MB and 2*128MB ECC(ECC disabled))
20GB Maxtor
Diamond TNT2 Ultra 32MB
Netgear FA310tx
cdrom
fdd (of course)

I recently put in the 2 128 ECC dimms and everything booted fine and seemed to run faster. Linux booted fine and I logged in as root into WindowBlinds. Well, I hate that environment, so I went to Gnome, and then finally to KDE. Well in KDE and Gnome, it would take forever to load even a command window. It took absolutely forever! Is this because of the ram that I have in there is supposed to be ECC and its not setup as such and Linux thinks it is?? I was told that I could mix ECC with non and it seemed to work. But I am going to back to 128 if this is going to be SOOOOO slow. Someone please help me out. I am kinda regretting buying this stupid ram in the first place. OH WELL!!! HELP PLEASE!!!

Have you tried rebooting the system into KDE? It may have not recognized it?
I dont know much about ram, but I imagine its compatible.
