You're dialling directly into a Windows NT server for your ISP? Most ISP's use an access server from Ascend or Cisco or 3Com, basically a big rack with a bunch of ISDN adapters in it, and a server only gets involved when the access server checks your authentication info.
Could be a problem with the authentication security level...if its set at max ie microsoft encrypted authentication, then you will have to install on you linux machine a module that will do MS-CHAP..I wish I had more info about that but unfortunately i don't ... you might have to call your isp to find out what type of authentication they use.. they may have better suggestions..
i know they use chap - so if the server machine is NT will it be ms-chap? as i can connect using my 56k modem from windows and ive run winipcfg and got all the relevant info i need. anyway, thanks ill do what you suggested.
