ok, im TRYING really hard to get started using various distros of linux but im having more problems then one person should have to lol, ok here they are see what you cant do to help me thanks! remember im NEW NEW to linux but not computers..

1. on my main computer i dont have an extra hard-drive to install another OS on so ive opted for the live version of Suse(using an old download of version 9.1) everythings setup and running great, it boots up and i see the first few splash screens and everything seems to chech/load then as it goes into the next screen the montor screen goes black and a small box pops up and says "Hz?" but it will not go further, i have to reset the computer from the case button. im using a Samsung 997df 19" monitor...i figure its on the OS side rather then the monitor though.

2.on a second computer i have around the house, im trying to install a full version of, well, any distro but i get the same message between red hat fedora 2 and kubuntu that says "not enough memory to load" when it tries to boot the OS's. Ive completely installed both before i get this message and its odd because ive installed the full version of the red hat os from the EXACT same discs on the EXACT same computer with the, you guessed it, EXACT same hardware...only thing i can figure is that my memory(two slots, 64+128) has a problem with it, though it was working fine before i borrowed it for another system for a few minutes...

any ideas on where to go with these 2 problems would be much welcomed, thanks!

I've had the same problem with SuSE Live 9.3 on my Samsung 19" CRT. Basically, SuSE is somehow seeing the refresh rate of the monitor (in our case it seems to be with Samsungs) and it's trying to display the desktop with a resolution and refresh rate not supported by our monitors. It's probably a driver problem, as an updated driver for the Samsung monitors would likely fix the problem. I don't know how to go about doing that, though, as I'm a relative Linux N00b and it's a Live CD/DVD.

The SuSE forums would be the first place I'd check out.

Oddly enough, the same SuSE 9.3 Live DVD works great on my system at work, but it's a Dell 17" LCD.

i havent gotten the amd64 kubuntu full version downloaded yet(will do it at work tommorow) but i had a version of red hat that ive been playing with tonight, its not a "friendly" feeling but ive gotten alot of playing done today. i even installed a flash plugin for mozilla(woot!)....now if i could just figure out how to get my firefox download to install, the install wizard comes up and i run thru it but when i hit the final "install" the window closes and nothing else happens

ive been trying to figure out where the "recommended" place is to install file on here(ala program files for windows)

Use the package manager that comes with the distro. If you have to have something that isn't in one of their repositories and you have to install it by hand it belongs in /usr/local. Probably /usr/local/bin.

hmm ill have to see if i cant find that, but im not in too big of a hurry, im actually just using red hat until i can get my kubuntu install to work, the live version worked FINE but i had some issues while trying to install the full version...im not sure i had the right version for a64 so ive downloaded it again and just need to burn and boot...only a my lunch break now so ill have to play with it tonght

ALSO, im having problems getting my dual boot to work, i have redhat set to my master drive 80gb, and windowsXP on my slave 120gb but i cant seem to access windows with my bootloader, it comes up with the choices between fedora and "other" when i pick other it just simply goes to a black screen with two lines of text(says "bootloaders and something else..") but never goes past that, and i cannot exit or do anything other then restart with my case button, im not sure what ive done wrong here but i hope my windows partition isnt messed up!! do i possibly just need to edit some bootloader options or what?

ill more then likely be installing kubuntu tonight to replace fedora but ill have to wait and see what the bootloader does with winXP with that...
