I've been having problems installing Linux on my new computer because it can neither auto-detect, nor recognize the presence of my ATI Radeon 7500 when I select it manually from a list. As a result, I cannot start the X-Window system and I cannot load KDE/Gnome.
I have tried both Mandrake 8.1 and Red Hat 7.2, and I have checked and confirmed that the XFree86 that comes with them are both compatible with the ATI Radeon 7500, yet neither of them can recognize my video card.
I'm pretty sure the problem either rests with the video card (Radeon 7500) or the motherboard (Gigabyte GA-7VTXH with VIA KT266A chipset) but I'm grateful for any suggestions as to what the problem may be, and how to fix it.
I am not very familiar at all with Linux and this problem has been frustrating me a great deal, as I really want to get this working before my next semester begins and I need to use Linux for all my computer science classes.
Thanks in advance for the help.
