It had crashed during the power outage.

Got the manufactors boot disk.

wrote zero's to the hdd, got could not complete.

Loaded the 98 boot disk created a new small partition *yeah finally sees part of the drive)

format c

load win xp

delete all partitions

quick format and win xp is installing WOOT 😛

Yip, sometimes a cable can do such a mess, but it's really rare.

I myself had a similar problem twice so far and the only way I was able to cure it was via a BIOS update. It was the only solution there was for me. I tried different cables, Prim. Slave/Master, Sec. Slave/Master, cable select ... nothing worked,

Are you running the latest BIOS?

Does the Win XP install CD you use have SP2 slipstreamed?

Its not the latest bios I am sure
I too tried quite a few settings.

Its not slipstreamed but fully updated with sp2 and all the latest fixes.

it lists the bios version as 1002

Hehe, "1002" really doesn't sound like the latest BIOS version.

According to asus.com version "1009" is the latest and there's even a beta BIOS available.

That means: It's FLASHING time!!

Pretty easy thing these days. IIRC Asus even offers a Windows flash utility.

If not, just take a good old Win98 boot disc, copy the Asus Flash tool and the new BIOS on it and make a boot from it.

When you flash, make sure to make a copy of the old BIOS before you flash the new one ... you never know. The flash utility itself should offer that option.

During flashing, make sure none of your kids is playing with the power fuses of your house or else you'll end up with a dead mobo.

Also, the flash utilities are very sensitive to lower/upper case and file endings, meaning that "a:\flash bios" sometimes won't do, but you need to type the whole file correctly, something like "a:\flash BiOs.BIN" or whatever the file name/ending may be.

I'll be online and in this thread for at least another hour, if anything comes up as a problem and you might need help.

🙂

I am cooking dinner for at least another 30 min so don't wait on me.

I am going to try tonight after 7 pm when things calm down around gere a bit lol 2:?00 now.

I appreciate everything Christian.

Dasm I burnt the last of the eggs Gotta run to the store lol be back after I finish cooking, maybe I won't burn anything else lol

Never cook food and computers at the same time - I learned that the same way as you did Mike. It took me though several lessons! 🙂

Hey Mike, I flashed the controller card I got from you that had the exect same problem as the one your having and it worked like a charm afterwards!! 😉

DAMn I was am still hoping not to have to flash the mobo (If I flash it it will be scared for the rest of its life 🙂 )

I am going to test the drive in another machine first, since I want to put the scsi array back on the server (Its having issues as well) and I want the audigy 2zs and the x800 pro on the server as well.

The wife can have the gf2mx and the onboard sound for now 😉 I have a ti4200 I'll upgrade her to soon 🙂

What Johan said could be a solution as well, at least for the controller card, which has a BIOS itself, that you can flash as well.

But it doesn't explain why a simple IDE drive didn't work on the board, though.

Fried rice is done.

3 lbs of pork steak cut up small.
2 large onions sauteed
12 eggs scrambled well.
10 cups of rice.

Season the pork steak with garlic and pepper. sautee the meat in sesame oil (about 2 ozs to start.)
Add the sauteed onions (sauteed in butter)

Add the eggs

First add half the rice to a large wok (half at a time) and half the meat eggs onions.
Stir fry till its good and hot.

Then add soysauce to taste 2-4 ozs to taste.

MMMMM

Do you use the regular sesame oil or the Roasted ?

Hmm, I tried that recipe some time ago, and it tasted great with regular sesame-oil. If you add some veggies (e.g. bell-peppers - yellow or red or some yellow carrots in thin slices or - for some more sharp taste - some radishes) it even tastes better.

Hmmm, and now I am hungry again. At 01.15 am. OK, I'll wait for breakfast ... 😀

/thinking:
A good mix: nice food, broken hdd, flashing BIOS'es, veggies ...
/end of thinking.

I use bacon, ribs, shrimp - though not as much because I got a much better recipe for shrimp, chicken , sausage...it handles them all well

I use half and half with shrimp and spice it with sauteed onion, garlic, salt and pepper ,in a bit of butter added to the half and half.then pour it over rice. Yummy

how many does it feed 12 easy. but its better reheated in the wok the second day.So it feeds the 6 people here for 2 days.

hehe This thread is starting to look like one of the forums my wife goes to.
and yes it is even better the second day althought I like lo mein noodles also.

Now all you have to do is think of a way to cook up that HD.
