Linux or Windows for encoding mpeg 1/2

I've always used my W2k or XP machines to encode movie files. But I am just curious about any performance advantages/disadvantages of encoding the files in Linux (using the same hardware configuration). Anyone w/ such experience? If Linux does it better, which applications are available for converting divx to vcd/svcd?
