Linux or Mac OS X more stable?

Linux is probably more stable. OS X has a lot of software that gets installed on it that is expensive crap and that screws things up.

But a moron can screw anything up. The only computer that is fool-proof are ones that are turned off, encased in cement, and gaurded day and night by machinegun weilding maniacs.

Of course that isn't going to help you any if the Earth was to accidently crash into the Sun.

Linux has a proven server setup that is as rock solid as anything else out there. But that can be screwed up and it DOES crash, but it's rare.

If you have a smart OS X user it can be just as stable.

I've never really had the linux kernel crash on me... it's usually just some new app that crashes and locks up X or something.

Not crashing, predictable (in a good way) results from programs, etc etc. (I am guessing)

Hi,

It seems like a fair question to ask "Which one is more stable?" but as you will learn through expierence you are comparing two different OS. Both OS's can be pretty bad, with a bad administrator. You have to learn, and lots and lots of reading, and learn from mistakes, then you will be able to make the most unstable OS, more stable. For, that very same reason, I like linux better, it allows you to customize it as much as you want to, thus allowing you to make it more stable, and turn off things that you don't want or that could make your computer less "stable, secure, blah, blah." Linux has a very big advantage over the other OS's in the market, and that is US, the community. The linux community offers support and fixes to bug faster than for any other OS, and if something should be changed the developers will certainly hear about it. That's why as linux users, we try to keep this community afloat, by doing things such as helping each other, and also reporting bugs if we find one, posting responses or providing help to newcomers. After, all remember, "dont ask what LINUX can do for you, ask what YOU can do for linux."

Good luck,
pitupepito.

Neither.

The question, especially lacking conditions, betrays a lack of knowledge.

Exactly what the previous poster said. A well configured Linux system can be rock solid for a long time, but poorly configured and it could hardlock in minutes. Mac OS X is tied to the hardware much more closely, as it is made specifically for Apple hardware, and I've never had my Mac crash. But I'm sure if you installed a bunch of 3rd party hardware/software with poorly written kernel extensions or drivers you could crash it pretty easily.

As far as the OS goes they're both pretty stable(when Linux is configured right)
All the crapware you install on top of them is what causes the most instability.

IME, the stability of linux is approaching the average longevity of the hardware its installed on.
In other words, I see more boxes go down due to failed HW then I do OS/software stability issues.
Can't speak for OSX, never used it.
