Linux or BSD?

Today I just cleaned my room and I cobbled together some old P.O.S. computer parts I had laying around and built me a computer I am going to use as a X terminal for my current desktop. I just want it to be able run Xwindows and not much else on it, so I will be customizing my installation. Its a Pentium MMX 133 (should be a 160 but those damn jumpers are so hard to find!), I has a cdrom, 2 hdds (2.3g seagate and a 428 meg generic compaq thingy), 90megs of dram and a generic EISA video card.

So what would be the best solution for this older hardware? I am thinking Slackware Linux or FreeBSD, or OpenBSD or ?.... any ideas? (microsoft need not apply) ;P

I am not going to use KDE or Gnome of course, I like Icewm so I'll download that independently....

i vote for debian.
start with a woody compact install. you can install over ftp right from the net, only 2 floppies to D/L
when its done, it will use about 200M of space and 4MB of ram
then you can add packages by hand with apt. you'll end up with a nice lean box

I thought about doing that, however I don't have a internet connection for that box, I have it just hooked up to my desktop thru a serial cable and I don't want to set up masquading or port forwarding anything like that on my desktop....

I actually wouldn't install BSD if I didn't have an internet connection... If you do go Linux, remember you won't be able to use apt-get in debian, or emerge in gentoo...

I agree with n0cmonkey. OpenBSD is written by morons for morons. If you want real security, use Windows ME.

Hell, if it's good enough for me, it's good enough for you.

You should look at Plan 9.

I've gotten at least 350fps with OpenGL at 2048x1536x32bpp with 4xAA on my Plan 9 box while encoding 15 mp3s at the same time and mirroring my hard drive.

And it's a P2-233!

It's sweet.

heh, ya and I heard that yahoo uses a macintosh se/30 to run their internet backbone...
the only problem is that the bandwith cuts in half when the little oscer the grouch thingy pops out of the trashbin or someone presses the wrong button and makes it quack.

If I could of found my slackware 8 cd I probably would of used it, however I think I'll try OpenBSD because n0cmonkey hates it so much.

Thanks much, you nuts

I would edit that, the mods frown on using that many smileys (not to mention those that are banished to dialup). I think (not positive) its a banable offence. Just a friendly word of warning 🙂
