Linux on NONpartitioned HHD?

I am considering loading Linux onto my hard drive. I read that you can load it withOUT partitioning the hard drive, but lose a little performance.

Anyone have any experience with this?

Better ideas?

Can I run linux on my computer with these components:
AMD 1.1GHz @ 1.2GHz Thunderbird K7 Athlon Processor
Asus AV7 Socket A motherboard (VIA Apollo KT133 Chipset)
256MB PC133 SDRAM (7.5ns)
IBM Deskstar 45GB 75GXP 7200rpm Ultra100 HHD(8.5ms)
Hercules GeForce2 ULTRA DDR 64MB AGP w/TV-out
Pioneer 16X DVD ROM/40X CD-ROM Drive
Plextor PlexWriter CD-R/RW Write 12X, RW 10X, Read 32X
Creative Labs SoundBlaster Live! X-Gamer
3COM US Robotics PCI 56K V.90 Fax/Data Hardware Modem
A Open Mid Tower Case w/300watt Power Supply
Dual Video Cooling System
17" Philips Magnavox Color Monitor
Klipsch ProMedia THX 2.1 Speaker System
Hewlett Packard DeskJet 812C Color Printer
Hewlett Packard ScanJet 4200C Color Scanner (USB)
MicroSoft Internet Keyboard
MicroSoft IntelliMouse (USB)
MicroSoft Millillennium Edition

Any info you can give is better than nothing! 🙂

I did go to Linux.org and did a search on this forum to learn more. But, there are some MANY questions.....

do you mean on a FAT32 partition. or do you mean like the SUSE liveCD, where you get it pseudo installed in a 100Mb file on your first existing partition and boot from CD?

I read that one of the latest kernel allows Linux to run in 2 folders within Windows (no partition magic, etc).

I don't think it has anything to do with the kernel. Like TravisBickle said,
there are some distributions that include a Linux-loader option...

This will create a Linux installation on a FAT partition, then will use a
side application to shut down windows to DOS mode, then switch the OS from
DOS mode to the Linux environment. Or Linux installs in an image file,
that it then uses as if that was a separate partition.

Drake comes with a program called linux4win that does what CQuinn described. But it doesnt always work and you dont get the full benefits of linux this way. It's better to give linux it's own partition or use a old HD you might have laying around.

OK. I was thinking of taking an old hard drive and trying that. Is 2GB big enough?

COOL!

Any recommendation on which distribution to try (remember I am a NEWBIE).

If you have a burner and broadband(unlike me)you can download the ISO for free.Mandrake and RedHat have FTP's to download from.Cheapbytes has the downloadable ISO's on cd(ready to install) for cheap if your unlucky like me and are on dial-up.

Also a great resource for getting started is LNO

I know Red Hat has an option where you can choose to not partition your hard drive. You will suffer a performance hit, but with your system, it shouldn't be all that noticeable. I would definitly go that route if you don't want to partition (although I would highly recommend partitioning).

I just want to learn and "play". Once I get more familar with it, then I can take the BIG plunge.

Thanks Guys!
