So i've been using a new release of linux these past couple days and i wanted to make it permanent, so i went ahead with a bigger step and installed mandrake 8.2 (yes, i know 9.0 final debuts tomorrow). I have two 80s, a 120, and a CD-RW in my rig, and i wasn't about to waste any of those on a linux partition, so i popped in an old 20 gig Quantum Fireball (drive that came with my comp) and let mandrake auto-partition the drive in full. I got tired and cold sitting below my fan, so i grabbed a blanket and started dozing off as i waited and waited for the drive to finish partitioning. It was about 15 mintues into it before i said screw it and took a nap.

After i woke up, i realized that it was in the same exact spot as i left it...so i rebooted, got back on track, and it finished installing in about an hour. I rebooted (w/o the CD) and i got an error from LILO that said, "L 80 80 80 80..." and i found out that it's a geometry problem or something like that with the drive. I got sooo frustrated and i couldn't even dual boot b/c the boot commander popped in before i could do anything and i wasn't given the option to make a boot disk with the "recommended" install (expert install lets you make a boot disk).

So i hopped on IRC on my dad's comp. (sporting a 56k modem....ugh!!!!) and shot over to some dal.net server in #linux. I started asking for help....and i felt like i had just parted the seas b/c they threw a fit..."this isn't #linuxhelp...this is #linux". Geesh...effing excuse me..i thought we were here to help each other! So i stayed in #linux b/c nobody was helpful/active in #linuxhelp. They got more and more pissed at me and eventually set a ban and i was kicked from the room for about an hour or two. They STILL didn't even shed ANY light on my problem...just kept effing saying "google.com....google.com". Ya know what? I went to google.com and asked away, but it didn't have ALL the answers to my linux problems. So i'm here now on my comp running win2k with only two HDs (had to pull out my 120 and second 80) so that this could work. I don't know what the heck i'm doing and if somebody wouldn't mind walking me through this, it'd be greatly appreciated.

I'm terribly sorry that you had that kind of experience. Apparantly some people have forgotten how it was like when they first started. As for your problem, seems to me like you would need is load up a boot disk and type in "fdisk /mbr" (in dos). This fixes the master boot record. You won't get a LILO prompt anymore but that can be reinstalled.
