I just heard from a friend that you can run linux from a cd. It's this true and where can I get the disk from?

Knoppix is quite popular, and worth a look. Mepis is a somewhat similar distro (debian based in both cases) but is said to have a slightly less perverse mixture of stable, unstable, and testing code.
Most Linux install cds, these days, are technically speaking Linux live-cds. Some are pretty much linux in name only (boots the linux kernel, forces you through the installer, and is never seen again e.g. Redhat or Suse) some are not hugely full featured; but much closer to a standard Linux envirionment (e.g. Gentoo)

There are also a huge number of lesser known ones, many of them derivatives of the major players. Clusterknoppix , for example is an openmosix enhanced version of Knoppix.
