Linux on Apple

Ok...maybe I can salvage myself. My mom just got this laptop...but sadly, its a Mac. Is there anyway I could put linux on it??? I heard that Linux PPC would run on Macs. How would I go about putting Linux, but still dual booting with Mac OS.

Would all the hardware still be compatible, like Ethernet and DVD drive????

Check out yellow dog linux, suse ppc, and I think debian has a ppc port. Also OpenBSD runs on apple ibooks and powerbooks. OS X looks very sweet and Ive considered getting a mac just to play around with it (and openbsd). If you look at the distros I mentioned you should be able to find docs on dualbooting.

At my previous job we had a PowerMAC G3 and wanted to put Linux onto it. I believe we tried Yellow Dog and that worked well, you will be able to easily boot into either MAC OS or Linux because after installation of Linux you can install a boot manager (part of the installation). However, unlike the x86 counterparts, there is some additional work you have to do to get the Linux working on MAC's. Grab a copy of Yellow Dog, and read through their documentation, I believe they explain the procedure..Regards

theres nothing wrong with apple computers, especially their new line of laptops. if its your mom's laptop let her run mac os. its simple to use. if its your laptop, do whatever you want with it. if you two share it, you might want to consider running linux under virtual pc. its a little sluggish when it comes to graphics but itll do the trick. i personally have a linux box, a windows box, and an apple laptop. i would NEVER install linux on an apple computer.

I think I saw a screen shot of Yellowdog's boot loader. It was slick, looked very Mac'y. Maybe it was LinuxPPC.. but it looked good anyway! 🙂 So, don't use floppoes, just dual boot the built-in way.

A guy in one of my CompSci classes got Linux to work on his iMac. I'm sure you can manage to get it working on your laptop.
