Linux on an IBM T42 - Heat Issues

I purchased an IBM T42 with a 7200 RPM drive. I use Linux on it 90% of the time and Windows occassionaly to play Civ3. My basic problem is that I feel the machine is running too warm. Idling at the lowest possible CPU speed setting at around 600MHz (in cpufreqd) I'm getting an average temp of 47C on my CPU (this is on my lap). Much of the heat generated by the machine is focused around the right palm rest where the HDD is situated. I'm beginning to think the hd is generating quite a bit of heat. But, the funny thing is that when I boot up, I've set it up to execute an init script that basically does:

hdparm -q -B64 -q -S12 /dev/hda

I thought using aggressive power management settings on the hd would be beneficial. So far no help. I guess my question is whether anyone else is using Linux + IBM T4x's with their evil 7200 RPM drives, and what your experience has been.

Just in case some one else could use this info: get a 2.6.7 or better kernel. Install the laptopmode script in sbin. Start laptopmode. It used to idle at 47C before, now its at 37C. Much better.
