Is it possible. If so it would be on an IBM or Toshiba laptop.

Yes, it's been done before. I've seen Linux on laptops before. However, don't ask me how to do it since I'm totally clueless when it comes to linux. ;)

If there isn't a listing specifically for the notebook model you want to use, you can search for component-level compatibility. But beware the fact that components are often customized for use in notebooks by the OEM.

BTW, if you use a search engine combining the make and model of the notebook and the word "linux" you may very well find step-by-step instructions posted somewhere for your particular notebook.
