Linux on a laptop with display headaches

I've tried installing both Mandrake 8.1 and RedHat 7.2 on my Inspiron 8100, but, while they install most of the way correctly, when it comes time for DrakX to configure my video settings, none of them work correctly with the LCD. They're always garbled and unreadable. I tried using the Generic LCD Display, I tried using just about every one I could think of.

Same thing with the video card. It doesn't have an option for the GeForce2Go card, so I tried using a generic GeForce setting, but the same thing. Now, that may just be because my monitor setting is incorrect, I dunno.

Anyone know what I can choose to get it to display properly?

Try installing the nvidia drivers instead of the generic nvidia drivers (the ones nvidia offers instead of the open drivers). Also, use xvidtune to try and adjust your settings if you can.

That's the thing, I can't do anything once setup gets to that portion of the install, and the display is far too garbled to do anything once it's done.

Personally, I'd also skip the X configuration during the install. You can always install the drivers afterwards. Also, did you check dell.com for drivers? They had some for my i8000 with an ati vidcard.
