Linux noob: Suse 10.1 slow bootup time?

Hey everyone, i just deleted win xp and decided to jump ship b/c i'm sick of all the viruses & random crashes.

I installed SUSE 10.1 Gnome desktop and so far i love it. simple & clean MAC/OS x like interface. The thing I noticed is that it takes much longer than WinXP to boot up, is there a way to fix it or it's just the way it is.

Also, do you guys have any recommendation of which distro i should get? i hate carrying 5 cds of 1 distro, what's a good distro to get that have the whole installation on 1 dvd?

Try this it works to convert the 5 CDs into 1 DVD:

Sadly, it only works if you already have linux installed.

If you want a torrent of the DVD for SUSE 10.1 OSS, look here:

I'd just wait for the official dvd to come out May 18th, its only three more days.

Also, not sure if this will help out with the startup times, but you could try to format your partition with XFS. It made reading and writing speeds insanely fast for me.

Umm make sure your hard drive is set to use dma. Check with Yast/Hardware/IDE DMA Mode.

If you think you can tweak the services that are running, you can take a look at Yast/System/System Services. Like sshd (server for openssh) is started for me, but I'm not going to be using it so it might as well be off. But be sure to know what you're turning off.

Not sure what else you could do.

Disable all services that you aren't going to need. YaST probably has some GUI for this, but if not install sysv-rc-conf (I assume SUSE uses /etc/rc{runlevel}.d/ for services--otherwise this tool won't help you) and you can run it inside a terminal.

Like SleepWalkerX said, just make SURE you know what you're turning off.

It'll take longer to boot if you're doing a kitchen-sink install. Try to install the desktop stuff you really want, and hold off on servers and daemons that you don't want at once (mySQL, Apache, et c). SuSE is pretty easy for a beginner, and you should have no problem once you get oriented if you want to install some of the server stuff you don't need now. It is really tempting when you have all that great free server stuff right there for the installing, but the more you're running, the slower you're running.

And the above-mentioned DMA will really matter.
