im using mandrake 9.0 and when i right click on a shortcut and click on the icon picture, then browse to the appropriate file I get a message saying I dont have priviledges. So how do i log in as a super user? Can I use .ico files for my linux icons for am i limited to png files only?

one has to be logged into as root....

to do that open up a console and type su then it'll ask for a password. You'll notice inthe text area that the $ sign changed to # which means that IN THAT CONSOLE you are root...I don't know if it applies to the desktop

Howveer should should be able to change icons normally with being root
