Linux newbie having install prob with defragmentation

Let me make clear first that I am definitely a "NEW" Linux user. Or at least I would like to be. I am trying to install Mandrake 8.0 on the free space of my hard drive that already has Win98 on it and I would like to keep it. I ran scandisk and defragmenter first before I tried the linux install. Then I started the install and when I got to the part where it checks the hard drive before partitioning it, I get the message that "the hard drive is too fragmented, please run "defrag" in /usr/bin/perl-install/install_interactive.pm line 113".

1. Why am I getting this message when I just finished defragging the hard drive immediately before the installation?

2. If indeed I need to run this other defragmention, how do I go about it?

Thanks in advance for any help you can provide
