Linux newb--recommend a good Linux book?

I finally broke down and took the plunge, just to see what Linux is all about.

Based on advice from an experienced user, I spent the $40 for a name-brand distribution, in this case SuSE 7.3, and it went in without a hitch. I highly recommend SuSE to anyone who is curious about Linux. It may be a sign of a maturing platform that I was able to get up and running (KDE and Mozilla) in a day without having the slightest idea of how Linux really works. Gotta start somewhere...

So, next step: Can someone recommend a good intro book on Linux? There were dozens at the local store, and I can't tell the good ones from the bad ones.

I hear that Running Linux by O'reily and SuSE Linux Installation & Configuration Handbook are good books. As for me I still use my old Unix in a Nut Shell and Your UNIX "Ultimate Guide For Unix" books from school if I need to brush up on something or I go to newsgroups or Tech forums.
 
I was in the same boat you are. They asked me here at work to setup a samba server on Redhat, no problem, just that I have a Windows background 😀 So at lunch I headed to the bookstore, much to my delight, there were tons of books. I took an hour and sifted through them all, I ended up buying a book called "The Complete Reference, Linux, 4th edition." It's been extremely helpful and covers several distro's, RH, Caldera, SuSE etc.

I too am about to take the jump to Linux, my distro of choice being Mandrake right now Im reading several guides and books on linux before I actually install the system. Hopefully all goes well. And grats for getting everything running on your first try.
 
Along with Running Linux, you might be interested in Linux in a Nutshell, which is basically a long book of bound man pages, but its a lot easier to find stuff when you have an index 🙂.
