Linux Networking Question

Ok, I recently installed Mandrake 7.2 (i am a linux newbie) and need to figure out how to get my "Linksys 10/100 PCI NIC" working. If anyone knows of any detailed instructions, please let me know. Or if you have any tips, let me know.

Lastly, if you use Mandrake 7.2, with a NIC, what card do you use? In case this one won't go.

Oh yeah, if I get this working, can I successfully network WinMe and Mandrake?

if you are totally lost just goto www.linuxdoc.org and check out their HOWTO sections. as far as getting networking running with that particular card if the os recognizes it then your set, if it doesnt then you need to go into drakeconf and set it up in there. www.linuxmandrake.com has a howto on that under their networking section. good cards that work well under linux are SMC. if you goto frys electronics look for the white box RCA cards, they are like 15 bux for sweet ass 10/100 ethr cards. get as many of those as you can afford, they are great for the money. there are like 5 files that you will end up editing when configuring your box to get it online, if it is going to be a firewall you can use the linuxdoc.org HOWTO's as a guide, if not then you need to look for these files

/etc/sysconfig/network-scripts/ifconf-eth0
/etc/sysconfig/network
/etc/hosts
/etc/inetd.conf
/etc/resolv.conf

if you are on @home there is a howto somewhere on the net that can get you started. at the least, the first thing you should do b4 you put your box online is comment out every line in /etc/inetd.conf (by putting a # at the beginning of every line) otherwise you will be pretty much a sitting duck for hackers, this will turn off a few of the obvious things, but you will still not be safe, anwyas my advice is to read read read.

1 - Linksys LNE100TX is supported. Should be autodetected on install of Mandrake. If not, choose the "tulip" driver.
