linux networking problem and ICS

I just setup Linux Mandrake last night. My network card is set up as a realtek card...its a Dlink. Is this right? Under harddrak it says realtek network card then when I go to choose a new card the dlink is highlighted(my card is the dlink). Does it know what it is it just uses realtek drivers? When I try to ping another computer the network card doesn't even flash and it says the network is unreachable. If I do get the card working I want to setup internet on it. I have ICS setup on another computer running win98. Is there a way to do this? Will I have to setup different ICS software(im useing the one that comes with 98)?

I'm not sure about your NIC problems with linux, but once you get it working you can use Win98 ICS just fine. Just set yourself a static IP in the 192.168.0.x range, add 192.168.0.1 as a gateway and DNS server, and you're good to go. You can't use DHCP with the linux box as it doesn't like the Win98 ICS DHCP server. I'm betting the ICS DHCP isn't up to standards.

I just threw together a Linux box last night too, my realtek card was identified as an NE2000 card, works for me, just left it.

Advice is right, use static, I couldnt get dhcp to work either. Have Samba running too.
Had to get Dnet setup so it wouldnt miss any cracking
