I remember deciding against Linux Mint awhile back because there was something about upgrades or support that was not as seamless as other distros. It was something like upgrades aren't really supported. Is this true?

Not at all. There's instructions on how to upgrade from 17.1 to 17.2 on the site.

Maybe you are think of the difference between a "rolling" distro, and one that's not?

Yes, maybe. Is there a difference between the Mint model and Ubuntu/Kubuntu/Lubuntu? Does Mint have a long term support release? I remember the LTS appealing to me because I didn't want to upgrade/reinstall all the time.

Mint 17.1 and 17.2 are both LTS releases. LMDE (Linux Mint Debian Edition) is a rolling release.

I think I see my confusion. The wikipedia kind of makes it sound like the 17 version is the first long term support offered or maybe there are just enough other versions that don't have long term support I got the impression they didn't have one. It says the 17.x series is supported until 2019.

I think 17 may have been the first Mint LTS release. However, the version upgrade process seems to work well and isn't that hard to do which is a plus for novices.

Yeah, to upgrade, you usually just click on the updater, and it will download all you need for the next version.

To be honest though, having a rolling release seems better (at least for me) than that kind of an update process.
They each have their advantages though.

who cares - setup your system correctly and follow the update manager. This is not Micro-slop, those updates are fixes for bad software mascarading as updates. Concentrate on setup what you have.
remember 1. do not use chromium 2. with Firefox install and use Ghostery. 3. Use only Startpage, never ever Google or the other one.
