So I have a portable install of linux mint 18.1 on a USB3 SSD. I have been trying to get claymore eth dual miner setup on it so I can run it on one of my AMD radeon systems, but so far I cannot get the miner to run. I tried updating AMD drivers through the software update, I tried installing AMD Radeon Pro drivers, which so far I have not been able to. I read online I needed to update the kernel from 4.4 to 4.8, and now it won't finish booting...OK so I can reinstall if need be.

My question is, what is the optimal way to get these drivers installed and claymore working? Cards would be 290s or a Fury, and I use the cinnamon version. I use linux a lot as a tool at work, though my knowledge of terminal commands and configuration is more basic. Thanks

I've mainly used Xubuntu for ethereum mining, but switched to only using Windows the past year. Does Mint support fglrx drivers for AMD? Last I checked, AMD dropped support with Ubuntu 16.04. Don't recall if you need the AMD APP SDK as well for mining still.

EDIT: apparently it does work with the Pro drivers on 16.04 LTS(no clue about newer versions, which don't play well with Ryzen for me yet), don't think I managed to get mining working when it first released, though.

Looks like mint 18 dropped support for the proprietary drivers, worked with 17.3 though I believe. Do you need the proprietary drivers to mine? Or is their a way to run with open source drivers?
