i installed Mandrake 8.0 with everything except server stuff.
i go to control center and try to setup internet. first i tried atuomatic IP detection and automatic card detection, it found the network card but it CANNOT connect to the internet. i jumped on my Windows box and checked what the DNS was, hopped back on the Linux puter and set the DNS manualy and set the IP to the IP i uses yesterday, i changed from that IP because it was not able to connect to a few of my fav websites.
it says it cannot connect.

why? i gave it the correct IP, i gave it the correct DNS, the mac address IS registered because this computer used to have windows on it which detected the IP fine. how can i fix the problem?

Are you supposed to be using DHCP or static ips? If DHCP look at dhcpcd. If static, then set the correct ip.

nslookup www.yahoo.com
ping www.yahoo.com
traceroute www.yahoo.com
ping 198.77.116.39
traceroute 198.77.116.39

Is the cable good?

Did you do any troubleshooting on this problem or what? And how is it actively refusing to connect to the internet?

Do you have a it on a private LAN or is connected to the internet directly?

If it's behind another computer, you're going to have to set up a gateway.

it's directly connected to the internet and yes i setup the gateway

i KNOW that those IP settings work because i use to use them on my Windows box but i released the IP then renewed it to get an IP on it that would work all the time (some websites would not pop up). i have manualy set my router when i had the thing on and those DNS, gateway and IP settings DO work.

my IP is technically dynamic but since it changes every 6 months or so i can treat it as static until i changes, i do that sometimes to prevent having to change the website redirect for dhs.org
*edit*
by actively refusing, i mean that it will not connect even though it can detect the network card, it installed all the required stuff and i put settings that i know work just to test it, and it failed.

You can try the latest distro of Mandrake. 8.2 It may have better support for your card.

I had a similar problem with my modem w/ RH 7.1 It wouldn't work worth crap after all the tweaking I could do.
However, when I upgraded to RH 7.2 it worked like a champ. Auto-detected and junk like that. :)

It's just a suggestion from my end since I don't know how to help out any way else.

Sounds like you installed the Firewall. Check into that and if you use a residential gateway, turn off that firewall.

no i didn't, the firewall is off and when i go to connections it CANNOT determine my IP. on bootup it says something similar to the effect that it is probing eth0, after 2 minutes or so it has these big bold red letters "FAILED"
