Linux Mandrake 7.2 beta

Thanks for the link on what's new. I was wondering for a while.

I do like the ICS-type config for Mandrake. For whatever reason I could NOT get ipchaing/masquerading to work correctly. This might help my stupid self 🙂

ANd I hope they fixed Xfree4 to handle left-mousies because there wasn't the option when I installed drake 7.1 and use x4

Shudder: Easy

[root@localhost root]# echo "1" > /proc/sys/net/ipv4/ip_forward
[root@localhost root]# ipchains -P forward DENY
[root@localhost root]# ipchains -A forward -s yournetwork/yournetmask -d 0.0.0.0/0.0.0.0 -j MASQ

Replace yournetwork/yournetmask with the addresses you use.

(Just my $0.02... Mandrake is EVIL)

Wow.. what's with the B I and U things.. whoa, too much for me to handle. I get by by not knowing how to format UBB posts.

And sure you may think mandrake is evil, but what isn't? I also boot up Slackware 7.1 every once in a while to try to really get my hands into Linux. I have to compile tulip.c for my Linksys card, but other than that I pretty much have my command line, X with KDE or Blackbox working fine, and things like Star Office and Gimp, etc. It'll be a slower but more rewarding process.

Anyway, thanks for the ipchains tip.

I agree with Andri. LM 7.1 wasn't large-hard-drive-with-dual-boot-friendly at all. If 7.2 is still using GRUB, I'm not touching it.

Hmmm, I use LM7.1 on my quad-boot boxes wihtout a hitch. Granted, I haven't touched grub and use NT loader for all OS selections.

Grub is cool. Why do I hate mandrake? Well I hate operating systems that think for the user (Windows * falls into the same category). Mandrake is for new users... but that's it. I saw one IDIOT put mandrake *AND X* into a server... my jaw was on the floor when I saw it.
(What did I do? Reinstall, put Redhat on the box and removed all packages that aren't explicitly required. No excess crap like a graphical UI or mc needed on the server.).

So what do you prefer for a desktop? I do like Windows2000 simply because yes I play games, and I do like the stability considerably over 9x (I didn't use NT because of many reasons).

But Drake is good for someone like me just getting into linux. WHen I want to actually do something in Linux, I use Mandrake. When I have time to try to get something up and running in Linux, then use it, I'll do slack.

I agree on the X with a server bit. If he's going to do that, he might as well run NT Server and play games on it while he's hosting.

And as far as Drake 7.1 not being too friendly with multiple boots.. For some strange reason even though I said not to install grub/lilo and use a floppy boot, it invaded my MBR space anyway. Fixed that, but no means no! 🙂

Is Mandrake still a derivative of RedHat? I had heard that this was the case back in the day. I don't know if it ever was and if it still is.

It was, but lately it doesn't seem to be the case. It has support for RPM and things like that, but it has taken on its own form.

Right now, I have 2 boxes on my desktop: a win98 and Linux. Win98 is for reading documentation, listening mp3, playing and other minor jobs, most of my work I do on Linux. Once upon a time it was Redhat 4.2, but now it has XFree 4.0.1, kernel 2.4.0-test7, new libc etc so it isn't redhat at all anymore 🙂
