Linux locks up hard (no mouse, no ctrl-alt-del)...

Here's the deal, my computer locks up hard when I try to play MP3s or use OpenGL in Linux. Normally it'll run for a few minutes and then freeze up. It doesn't do it in Windows though. Here's my system-

800MHz Athlon TBird
256MB Micron PC133
ASUS A7V
nVidia TNT 16MB AGP
Monster MX300 Sound

Sorry that that's not much information, but that's about all I have to give you. Thanks for any help you can provide.
