Linux Laptop

Hi. I'm in need of a laptop..but I have some requirements. First and foremost is this thing has to be light. I will not be needing anything heavy or bulky. I won't be playing games as I have a desktop. I am willing to sacrifice speed for the sake of portability. The most I will be doing is emails, word processing, net surfing, some tools such as Matlab (But I don't do anything that needs huge processing power), Gimp, etc.
If i need to game I have a pc with a 2400+ and a ti4200 😉 Amazingly enough gaming is quite enjoyable on it.
That brings me to my second caveat: it has to have hardware supported by Linux. That will be my operating system.

I know there are sites out there, but before I dive into them I'm wondering if anyone else has gone a similar route. I'm not asking anyone to do research for me, but if someone has it done and has some reccomendations then I'm more than willing.
As for the price...I would prefer it under 1000; I know "light" and "cheap" don't fit in the same sentence, but I'm really more interested in functionality rather than speed.

Thanks 🙂

Light and Cheap can happen as long as you dont want the latest stuff... Check out the Toshiba R100. 1.1Ghz Pentium M and 2.4 pounds, or ~3 with the extended battery. Doesnt have an internal CD/DVD drive though. I believe people have installed linux on it, but you should google it a little bit first. There are also some panasonic toughbooks that are very light and small, but they are more expensive and hard to find I believe.

One should realize that Linux is a very computer friendly operating system. If its a working laptop, you can install Linux without incidence. I have just installed Ubuntu on an old Dell LT laptop. Minimum components, no problem.

Yeah, see if you can find a Thinkpad X40 or X30 something for cheap. I think the X family laptops are usually around 3 to 3.5lb. There's a whole Linux friendly wiki for these Thinkpads. There's an X40 on sale in my city's Craigslist for $550, so if you shop well, it shouldn't break the bank.
