Linux Kernel Panic

I have been trying to update my Linux Mandrake 7.2 kernel to 2.2.18, after compiling, configuring, and reseting LILO...I try and boot the new kernel and it hangs with this error:

kernel panic: VFS: Unable to mount root fs on 21:05

What does this mean? And more importantly how do I fix it? Exscuse me but I am a little fresh when it comes to linux....
