Well Alan Cox has taken the advice of lawyers (or something) and has decided to NOT release security fixes to those of us in the US. This shows the stupidity of the DMCA.

Link!

Is it me or do lawmakers get stupider and stupider each year?

<< The Copyright Law states that:

Without infringing copyright, the public has a right
to expect:

---to experiment with variations of copyrighted
material for fair use purposes, while preserving the
integrity of the original;

---to make transitory copies if ephemeral or
incidental to a lawful use and if retained only
temporarily.

That about sums it up for me. Why would the DCMA restrict the information surrounding secuity fixes in Open Source code? That is just really really wierd.

From what I understand of the DMCA (I will not understand all of it even if I wanted to go to law school) the impact it could have is horrible. Imagine not being able to test the security of a product you are planning on purchasing for your company. Well atleast you will have the manuacturer's word that the product is secure. Thank you Microsoft.

Also reverse engineering is destroyed so compatibility between a linux system and say a Windows system without help from Microsoft would be hampered.

remember, since you can't test it, no one else can either, so it doesn't matter if it has any holes in 😉😉😛
