Linux is fun

My usual operating systems are Windows 7 Pro, Linux Mint 17 and OS X. I got board today and decided to install Virtualbox in LM. I then created a VM and installed the Windows 10 pro beta (burned ISO). I then brought up Internet Explorer, came here and logged in and posted this. LOL

Am I a geek?

I think you mean virtual machines are fun. GNU/Linux is nice though cause you can install at will to any hardware/software you can manage without begging for permission from some company.

I used to have 3 different browsers open so I could manage 3 facebook accounts at the same time, one of them got the 5000 friend + 1000 pending friend request limit in under 5 days and I only added like 20 people in the beginning, the other leveled off at 4000 something and the third only reached 300 so it was easier to manage.

I've used VM but decided I wanted to see what would happen with the actual physical hardware. Win 10 is installed on the same physical drive as Win 8.1. I wanted the boot manager to be active for a dual boot.

I did that, too, but I was experimenting with VB in LM and was stunned at how easy Win10 install went. I used the 64-bit Win 8.1 profile and no issues at all. The Win10 direct install also went without issue, but that was another day.

I have been reluctant to get involved with VM. Though for my Linux installs ( I have 12 distros on 1 hard drive ) I should probably work with the netbootin boot manager. I was wondering does VM offer another layer of protection against malware, virus etc.? I am familiar with Sandboxing but haven't tried it.

I take the position that nothing is safe. For my day-to-day computing environment (W7Pro), I maintain SSD-based clones that are updated at least every two weeks if not sooner. My playtime in LM and OS X is deemed highly volatile.

It's easy to customize. That's what I like.

I've been playing with Mint 17.1 and it's actually really nice and polished. So far everything seems to work out of the box. Still in early stages though. I wanted to move my SSD to my new machine but it wont boot so I'll be forced to reformat, and figured I may as well upgrade to something newer. I found an old OCZ Vertex 3, and, it actually works (lol) so I just installed Mint on it on the new machine. Going to get all my stuff working the way I want, then image it to the other SSD (I don't trust the Vertex lol). Given Linux is free it's nice not having to deal with serial numbers, licensing, or any of that bull crap. You can download distros to your heart's content and play around with them. Same with the software available for Linux.

Downside is sometimes you need to do major workarounds for stuff that would be super easy in Windows. Things are always improving more and more though. Like I'm surprised at how much hardware works out of the box now days. On this new machine the built on video works fine, I get full 1080p and full colors and everything, the audio works, even the volume control on my keyboard works. Those are all the things that would have required hours of work to figure out before. Oh and networking works. Even in Windows you have to fight with that sometimes.
