I just installed Mandrake 8.2 (love it!) and in the control center -> hardware I have to items under soundcards and one is VIA AC97 on board sound, but I also have a
SB128 card that I would rather use. I just can't figure out how to disable the on board sound. Any suggestions?

Thanks!

Oh ya, I'm using Gnome right now...

If a module is getting loaded for that sound device, stop it from loading up. If support for it is built into the kernel, compile a new kernel without support for that sound chipset.

first off, make sure its disabled in your bios. then, find out what module is used for your onboard audio. go into /etc/modules and comment it out with a # sign. find out what module your sound card uses, and add a line to /etc/modules that lists it. should work.

btw, its just a SB 128, how big of an improvement could that possibly be over onboard audio? just a thought :)

WOOHOO!! I love it when something works!

Thanks BingBong, I disabled it in the BIOS and that cured it.

I hear that! :D Actually it is quite an improvement because UT was continually freezing on me and I knew it was that stupid onboard sound so I went out and got the only card I could at that time, which was an SB128.
Also when I would listen to MP3s and do little things like open up Internet Explorer or load basically anything it would cause the song to skip. I finally got fed up...

Thanks again for your help :)
