linux help

I am very new to linux first off, and im using mandrake 8.1 with the gnome desktop. I noticed that I only have about an 800x600 area that i can click and drag, move icons, etc. that is in the upper left hand corner of my screen. Is this normal? on our school computers using gnome I am pretty sure you can manipulate the whole desktop. Same goes with trying to set an image as my desktop. it appears as if there are 2 images, one in the back covering the whole desktop, then a smaller version on top covering that previously mentioned ~800x600 area. So anyways, whats wrong? or is gnome just like this normally?

any help is appreciated
