linux help needed...

hi my friend installed linux on his computer amd 750-256ram-32mb savage card-3com nic-etc...

redhat 7.1 however when i went to help him the screen comes up crazy. the login is fine however it looks like it is going to be fine but you cannot se the names of icons etc. any ideas what is wrong he says that he selected his vid card i just dont know. also he has a graphical login with kde.

So he's booting to the graphical login I assume? Sounds like X isn't configured properly. Maybe the monitor resolution her chose when installing was too high or possibly the refresh rate.

Boot to single user mode and edit the file /etc/inittab. Towards the top, there is a line that says "id:5:initdefault:". Change the 5 to a 3. This will then boot the machine to a text based login. Then you can run Xconfigurator or likewise to fix the resolutions. Then run startx to start kde.

Or, the easy way out would be to reinstall but make sure to select text based login rather than graphical so you won't get stuck if X/kde isn't configured correctly.
